A Diastasis is the separation of the Abdominal muscles down the front of your stomach.
This separation is caused when pressure inside your stomach increases and it pushes the abdominal muscles outwards stretching the connective tissues and separating the muscles.
Most of the time this is caused during pregnancy as your baby grows. However it can also be caused when you have too much visceral fat (fat around your internal organs), frequent or rapid weight changes, weightlifting wrong and even some abdominal exercises. Diastasis Recti also occurs in babies and as they grow it closes.
Your mum tum or lower back pain could be a sign of Diastasis, and if that’s the case, there is a lot you can do to fix it. If left untreated or if you don’t rehab it properly symptoms can get worse and in rare cases the connective tissue might weaken and cause a hernia.
Stay tuned over the next couple of weeks - its Diastasis awareness month...
